How to Create a Study Schedule for Your Final Exams

Ms. Pratibha Motyar
Ms. Pratibha Motyar
Exams are the most stressful time of the year for students and lack of proper approach towards groundwork for preparation can add up to the already stressed minds of the students. As the exams make up for the most part of students’ grades in a particular session, therefore, it becomes really important for the students to do well in their exams. The main concern of students during exam time is how to study and revise the vast course in an organized and a limited period of time. The first step towards that is creating a study schedule which ensures practical and efficient way of preparing for exams.Good time management can help students to improve the way they approach preparation for exams. Preparing for exams is a difficult endeavour for most of the students that is overwhelmed by procrastination and a general lack of interest and time.Making a realistic study schedule ensures better preparation, increased concentration and efficient management of time.

Students can follow the below mentioned simple steps to draft a pragmatic and effective study plan for their exams:
  • Start early- The students should aim to begin studying at least one month in advance. Mark the days in a calendar on which the exams are going to take place. Place the calendar in a visible location so that it is easy to see.
  • Inspect the available time- The students should aim to be realistic.Don't create a schedule that is too rigid or that which is not flexible enough to put up with the changes that may arise at a later stage.Decide the number of hours you will have to study during the day and also throughout the week. Try to find a balance between your study plan andyour social life at the same time keeping time aside for rest. Understand and identify what is the best time for you to study and stick with it.
  • Determine and prioritize study goals-Set your priorities according to the subjects you find tough and also according to the time table of exams. Make a list of all the subjects and for each subject narrow down the topics to study. Consider every topic and next to every topic mark the level of difficulty for you as ‘tough or easy’. This helps understanding which topic requires how much time to study. Then make a small note beside every topic as to Concentrate most time on the most important and strenuous subjects.
  • Choose a study style-Study schedule should be so designedthat every day the studying time remains the same which in turn helps the students to create consistent and positive study habits. There is no one way of studying. For every student different methods of preparing a subject may work out.Study in the ways which works out most effective for you.Create a schedule according to your body energy levels. If your energy levels are high during day time then create a strong study time for day and if it is in during night time that you concentrate more, then devote more time for night hours.Try to reduce the time you spend procrastinating and improve upon increasing concentration. At the same time stress and anxiety levels should be kept in check so as to maintain a healthy study schedule so as to avoid any emergency medical condition during exam times. Don’t keep long study hours and keep taking short snack breaks in between study hours.
  • Stick to the schedule- Sticking to a schedule is as important as creating one but often it turns out that students create a study schedule only to abandon it without following. Students should avoid procrastination and endeavor to complete their study schedule by following it religiously. Choose a location for study that has minimal distractions or interruptions. Distractions like mobile phones, chatting, irrelevant internet surfing should be avoided altogether. One easiest way of adhering to study plan is to award yourself consistently for successfully clearing every day of schedule. Also it is important to get a good night's sleep everyday between a fixed time schedules.
  • Lastly, keep yourself energized and fresh in the morning of the test. Relax and don’t stress.

Exploring Law as a Career Option

Astha Mehta

Law is one of the popular career choices in our country from a very long time especially for those whose families have been into this profession for generations but this ideology is changing and those who do not have a family of lawyers are opting for law because of the wide career option gates that law has opened. All you need to have is the passion to study law.

Earlier people just compartmentalized law into civil law and criminal law which has changed and there has been an immense rise in the specializations like IPR, Corporate Law, Business Law, International Economic Trade law etc. offered by Law Schools and Universities A degree in law not only lets you practice as a lawyer in the courts or work in an MNC but also opens up career options in sectors like corporate management, legal services, administrative services and armed forces. The diversecareer options that a law degree offers is unmatched by any other professional degree. Law is a multi-disciplinary endeavour and it draws from other disciplines, for instance a criminal lawyer needs to have some understanding of human psychology and forensic science, and a corporate lawyer must have some understanding of commerce and capital.

Students interested in making a career in law can either do a three-year law course after graduation in any discipline or a 5 years integrated law(BA LL.B) after 12th class. Many Universities have now introduced BBA LL.B and BSc LL.B as well. The LLB course is regulated by the Bar Council of India which sets rules and regulations regarding legal practice in the country and a higher degree in law id regulated by University Grant Commission (UGC). Higher degrees like LL.M and PhD in Law can help one pursue a career in academics.

A candidate can start preparing for the entrance exam either in Class XI or Class XII. Students aspiring to do law from National Law Schools have to appear for CLAT (Combined Law Admission Test) which basically tests them on their general english, legal aptitude, logical reasoning, general awareness and elementary mathematics.

There are a plethora of opportunities for a law graduate like practicing in the Courts, Judicial Services, UPSC, Armed Forces, Academics, NGOs, Legal Editor, Legal Journalist, Legal Advisor for MNCs, legal officers for Banks and Insurance Companies, LPOs, KPOs, Armed Forces (Judge Advocate General) etc.

Why Should One Aim For The Ivy Equivalent Law Colleges In India?

Aditi Prasad

John F Kennedy, in his speech addressing young students at California University way back said, we made it to moon in this century, not because it’s easy but because it’s hard. Hovering around the said idea solicitously, it occurs to me why should that be hard – because nobody thought of it as an esoteric idea in this century or is it hard because people who lived prior to us actually believed it is quite unyielding to be so literally over the moon!

Mr. President proclaimed that in a windy weather sitting by the bay, he decided to have a man with an American flag hoisted on the luminous contours of moon. Obviously he ignored the kurtosis involved but, centripetal to his concern was the idea viewed through a glass darkly. And it was the zeal floating through the success of the same, which affirms what Einstein once opined. Knowledge limits us to what exists while imagination flees us to discover things and places we never visited let alone perceived of their existence.

So it’s okay to surmise the best for us, in fact why not the best! As humans with equally vested thought processing, speaking, listening and discovering and inventing ability, nothing precludes us from achieving the Everest over and above significant others.

Having settled that proposition, it is imperative to determine why one should enroll in the Ivy equivalent law schools of India. Well! India is a developing country with a population over a billion and a shebang of resources not to mention, mired in non judicious use by venal and corrupt functionaries of state. The real dent is on the economy as India’s capital structure is just not enough to match the labor force. Coming to think of law, a profession which is common both amongst the erudite elite  acquainted to  all the finery money can buy and penurious pittance earning class who spends most portion of their life on the Carey street. The trouble comes in covering the bridge between the two sides in an already squelching corporate and litigating climate mired in competition and all the stealth travelling across its stretch in market. This by far remains one of the greatest reasons in vicious filtering of professionals in legal field into either extremely rich or extremely poor, in the traditional field of litigation.

However, recently at the advent of globalization and wide scale trade and commerce legal filed has witnessed spawn of jobs in the corporate sector, with many companies splurging their capital in knowledge process outsourcing companies like KPOs and LPOs.  Also, due diligence, legal services management has burgeoned the work of law firms who have now begun to charge companies at exorbitant rates, and opened more employment opportunities for people. Companies nickel and dimed under the stress of meeting several legal requirements to carry out their business, have also begun employing a whole team of sharp lawyers to maneuver their matters.

However, the position even if numerous are just not enough to meet about half breed of lawyers India produces from every institution from its own dreary constellation of academia. That gives both the companies, KPOs, LPOs and law firms ample of space to choose the best, which employ esoteric and abstruse selection procedure, crossing which is not every body’s cup of tea. Hence, it is extremely important to choose a premier law institution today as your CV starts building from the moment you choose the institution, to the marks you score etc. Also, not every institution would match the quality of faculty teaching in the top national top llb colleges in India thereby miring the quality of education imparted.

Thus, choosing the best law colleges in India not only is a need but  also is a measure that would help you grow overall to face the adversities of competition and recession plaguing the Indian market today and as regards one’s  ability to be the best is concerned, Impossibility is mere state of mind, possibility is where truth begins.

My argument to attend an elite college mostly focuses on what one can do after attaining that degree. Sure, the plethora of experiences – reading Shakespeare with the world’s leading authority on it, or learning the affects of climate change from a Nobel prizewinner, for example – are fantastic while at college. But the maximum value of the degree, the moment when those burdensome student loans really begin to pay off, is once you’ve graduated from the institution.

In a corporate environment that still largely favors white men, an Ivy League college degree opens doors that would otherwise remain closed for most. In recent years, I’ve interviewed successful people in a variety of industries. Among them: One of two black presidents in the history of the Harvard Law Review (the other was Barack Obama) who now runs a multi-billion dollar private equity firm, and a Yale graduate Latina female CEO of the Girl Scouts.

In both cases, intelligence and perseverance got them far. But they also both agreed that an Ivy League education afforded them pivotal opportunities for their careers today, decades after graduation from those hallowed institutions. For both minorities – the Ivy “stamp of approval” became the first in a long list of achievements.

Importance of Law Education to Build a Career

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
― Nelson Mandela

Dr Komal (Assistant Professor)
Importance of legal education can be known from that, law could be used as a medium to bring change in the society. Legal study promotes facility in arguments, accuracy of the expression and skill in interpreting the written words, as well as some understanding of social values. Ignorance of law is not innocence but a sin which cannot be excused. Thus, a legal educator has a responsibility not only to produce good lawyers but also to create cultured law abiding citizens, who are inculcated with concepts of human rights as well as values. The significance of law education in a democratic society cannot be exaggerated too much.Legal education could be interrelated with the profession as advocate in courts, teaching, research and administration in different branches provided where law plays a role. Apart from these fields commercial, industrial employments and other activities require the use of legal knowledge and skill.Legal education is a really broad concept.

The value of legal education acknowledged in the words of Glanville Williams “Knowledge of law increases one understands of public affairs” .Law Education always helps other professions such as politics, administration, corporate etc.  This is due to two reasons; first of all Lawyers belong to an independent profession. They are not correlated to the government or other authority as such due to its in-dependency, and secondly as lawyers has to deal with each and every organ of society in one way or the other so they are directly in contact with society in its entirety. Hence lawyers are the people who are most familiar with the problems of society. An administered and relevant legal education is a sine qua non for a better justice delivery system. Giving legal education a human face would create cultured law abiding citizens who are able to serve as professionals.Growth and development of a nation highly depends upon good quality education and improved way of imparting legal education is definitely going to produce beneficial results in the growth of a nation. A lawyer not only plays his character in courtroom hall for litigation purposes but also performs several other roles such as an expert lecturer, arbitrator, mediator and reconcile. In order to keep pace with the dynamic society, legal education in India should be associated with the modern-day ways of imparting legal studies. Hence Top law colleges in India owe the responsibility to provide quality legal education to build better legal professionals in future.
